La Graciosa is an island of volcanic origin recognized since June 26, 2018, as the eighth island of the Canary Islands, thus ceasing to be considered as an islet, however, this island belongs to the archipelago of Chinijo along with the islets of Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Alegranza, all part of the municipality of Teguise (Lanzarote) and dependent on the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
We are talking about a virgin island with a unique and extraordinary natural paradisiacal environment in which we only find 2 small inhabited villages, Caleta de Sebo and Pedro Barba, which make up a total of 739 registered inhabitants (2019). The latter being a small ghost town in which we will only see a few small plots, generally of wealthy people, seeking tranquility in a place as inhospitable as beautiful.

- The ferry is taken at the port of Órzola, located north of Lanzarote, where we will have free parking nearby on presentation of the ferry ticket.
- Free cancellations at least 6 hours in advance before boarding.
- Pets are allowed on the ferry, but it does not have access for people with reduced mobility.
- Keep in mind the ferry return schedule if we stay in Lanzarote, varies depending on the time of year in which we travel.
- It has numerous tourist accommodations in Caleta de Sebo, but limited, it is also very common to stay in Lanzarote, as it has a wider range of accommodation.
Once arrived at this paradise, it is necessary to take provisions of food and above all water or soft drinks to hydrate ourselves if our purpose is to know the island in depth, since we will only have restaurants (highly recommended) in the town of Caleta de Sebo which is where the ferry will leave us.
How to arrive and how to move around La Graciosa?
Another detail that we should not overlook is that being on a virgin island, where there is no asphalt on the roads of the village, in none of its beaches we will have services of any kind. We must be careful and be well informed especially in the bathing areas where currents are usually formed, as there is no lifeguard post or flags that indicate how the beach is at that time.
To move around La Graciosa, we only have 3 options:
- Renting a bicycle, 10€ per person and full day, the most recommended, affordable and enjoyable option.
- By 4×4 cab, 25€ per person for the complete tour of the island and supplements for getting closer to the beaches (price varies depending on which cab you hire).
- On foot, not a very recommendable option given the heat and the few shady places we can find along the way, although in the south there are many stretches where there is no choice but to go on foot.
Both the option of bicycles and 4×4 cabs, we must request it in the town of Caleta de Sebo, where there are several companies that offer this service, also in recent times have implemented electric bicycles that facilitate us as far as possible the journey, reducing our physical effort.
It is worth mentioning that the southern part of the island has fewer trails to go with the bike because it belongs to a protected Natural Park and there are signs that prohibit us to enter with it, also the terrain becomes sandy and is impracticable to move by this means.
However, the northern part of the island has very marked and signposted trails, with its own dirt road to develop this activity effectively, which makes this means of transport ideal to visit and enjoy this privileged natural environment.
What to do and what are the recommended activities on the island of La Graciosa?
This island has its main attraction in the virgin beaches and in the volcanoes that form it and that are expanded throughout the island, thanks to the fact that it is the youngest island of the whole Canary archipelago we can say that it has one of the largest Marine Reserves in Europe, perfect to be known through diving activities.
Activities we can do on the island of La Graciosa:
- Hire a catamaran that will take you to know the island by sea and in which you can know the uninhabited islets of the Chinijo archipelago.
- Snorkeling or scuba diving, highly recommended to dive and be able to contemplate the amount of flora and fauna that treasure its depths.

- Visit the villages of Caleta de Sebo and Pedro Barba, undoubtedly a very unusual place to see and with very friendly inhabitants who at all times will offer their help for whatever you need, they are very hospitable people and used to constantly receive tourists.
- Taste its exquisite gastronomy in any of the restaurants of Caleta de Sebo, highly recommended the Lapas de la Graciosa and any type of fish or seafood, very fresh.
- Enjoy the sunny days and good temperatures that are always enjoyed in this area of Macaronesia, which is why they are known as the lucky islands, because no matter what month of the year you go you will always find spring temperatures around 18-25º.
The secret of this privileged temperature throughout the year, is due to its location, as it is located in an area in which they are exposed to the effect of the trade winds that cool the atmosphere, as well as the influence of the cold current that bathes its coasts. On the other hand, the anticyclone of the Azores is what prevents temperatures from dropping in winter, thus providing an enviable climate for the whole world.
