Isla Arena is a small uninhabited island in the Gulf of Mexico. It is about 4 miles long and between 1.5 and 2 miles wide. The highest point of the island is about 300 feet above sea level. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and has an ecosystem formed mainly by mangroves and tropical vegetation, including palms, acacias, wild cacti, bamboos, etc., but also some trees such as mahogany or ebony that were planted by its former inhabitants.
Isla Arena was inhabited until 2010, when, due to the rising water level caused by climate change, most of the residents moved from their homes on this island to the city of Campeche, in mainland Mexico.
There are still some buildings on Isla Arena that were built before 1970, when most of the residents left for good after being evacuated due to Hurricane Beulah that year, which caused widespread flooding throughout the state of Campeche, including Isla Arena, where most of the residents lived in that time period after migrating generations ago from other parts of Mexico such as the state of Veracruz to the north, near the Cancun area, where they first settled upon their arrival from Europe centuries ago after fleeing religious persecution during the medieval times at that time.
