The Best Beaches and Coves in Lanzarote

The beaches of Lanzarote offer tourists a wide variety of options, given the large amount of coastline it has, being an island. Although its best beaches and coves are usually the ones that attract the most tourists, many of those that are not so well known, are still a recommended point of visit.

The characteristics provided by the geographical location of Lanzarote are perfect for tourism, as its waters are usually at an average temperature of 19.5 degrees, perfect for swimming. The weather is also usually very good throughout the year, as in the other islands of the Canary Islands. The island of Lanzarote is also home to the Timanfaya National Park, and is considered a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco (the entire island).

As we have already mentioned, the island offers a great diversity in terms of beach characteristics. In addition to offering different types of landscape, it also offers different types of sand. If you have never seen a volcanic sand beach (it does not occur in many places), we recommend that you try the experience in one of those that you can find in Lanzarote. It wouldn’t hurt to also visit the beaches of Tenerife, or the beaches of Fuerteventura, equally remarkable within the Canary Islands as a whole. If you are looking for something completely different from what this area of islands has to offer, the beaches of Barcelona could be ideal for you.

Main tourist areas of Lanzarote

When talking about the beaches of Lanzarote, the ideal is usually to segment them according to the area to which they belong. In your case, Lanzarote has 3 areas that stand out above the rest, and contain some of the most beautiful beaches on the island:

  • Puerto del Carmen: Undoubtedly, the most touristic and visited area of Lanzarote, becoming at night the epicenter of nightlife in the area. It has some of the most comfortable beaches and with more services of the island. Playa Blanca, Playa Los Pocillos or Playa Matagorda are some of the most outstanding.
  • Costa Teguise: here you will find some of the most famous and spectacular beaches, such as Playa de Las Cucharas, Playa del Jablillo or Playa de Famara.
  • Playas del Papagayo: One of the most deserted areas of the island, where you can breathe tranquility, and urbanization has not yet affected the landscape. All its beaches are of white sand, and calm and crystalline waters that offer an incomparable bathing. Its outstanding beaches are: Playa de Papagayo, Playa de las Mujeres, Playa de la Cera, Playa Puerto Muelas, Playa del Congrio and Playa del Pozo.

The best beaches of Lanzarote

There are several beaches on the island that have achieved fame individually, even though they are part of large beach areas. For one reason or another, they have become the most appreciated.

Papagayo Beach

The best known beach of Lanzarote, which we will have to access through a dirt road, using the car. The access to the beach area is located on the road, in a sentry box, where we will have to pay 3 euros to continue the way.

Blanca Beach

In contrast to Playa del Papagayo, Playa Blanca is one of the most urban of the island, as it is located in the main tourist area of Lanzarote. Its location provides the beach with numerous services, and has a very nice promenade.

Beach of Famara

It offers one of the most beautiful landscapes of the island, partly thanks to the fact that it is located right next to the highest peak, which can be seen from the beach itself. It is quite valued by surfers, who take advantage of its strong winds to enjoy the sea.

Laguna de los Ciclos Beach

Another beach to visit if you like picturesque landscapes. In this beach there is a beautiful contrast between different colors, naturally occurring in the different elements. The black sand that forms the beach contrasts with the reddish color of some of its rocks, and with the green of a strange lagoon that is inside the own sands of the beach.
