What to do in Coral Beach in Oaxaca?

Oaxaca’s Coral Beach is an ecological marvel, but it wasn’t always so. Before it was designated a protected area by the Mexican government in 1994, the beach was littered with trash and debris. The tide washed these items onto this stretch of coastline every day, leaving it clogged with debris.

Playa Coral en Oaxaca

Oaxaca’s Coral Beach was once one of many beaches along Mexico’s Pacific coast suffering from pollution due to overfishing and destructive fishing methods such as dynamite fishing (also known as blast fishing). Overfishing caused the population of many fish species on Mexico’s Pacific coast to decline, while dynamite fishing destroys coral reefs by killing other animals, such as crabs and lobsters, while damaging the reef itself.
